Pte Winston Donnell, 6 UDR, 9th August 1971.

The 1st UDR soldier killed. He was shot more than 30 times by gunmen at a vehicle checkpoint near the Tyrone/Donegal Border. Called out on the first day of internment. He was 22 years old, on duty and single at the time of his death.

Pte Francis Veitch, 4 UDR, 3rd September 1971.

The 2nd UDR soldier killed. Shot as he walked to a sentry post outside Kinawley RUC Station. His father had died the previous month. He was 23 years old, on duty and single at the time of his death.

LCpl Denis Wilson, 8 UDR, 7th December 1971.

The 3rd UDR soldier to be killed. Shot as he lay ill in bed at the family farm house, Curlough, County Tyrone, by gunmen who forced their way in. His sister drove the four miles to Caledon RUC Station, the telephones in the area were not working because of an IRA bomb attack on the exchange. He was 31 years old, off duty and single at the time of his death.

Pte Sean Russell, 7 UDR, 8th December 1971.

The 4th UDR soldier killed. Shot in his home in Belfast as he watched television with his family. His ten-year-old daughter was injured. He was 30 years old, off duty and married with 5 children at the time of his death.

Sgt Kenneth Smyth, 6 UDR, 10th December 1971.

The 5th UDR soldier killed. One of two men killed near a border farmhouse at Lisdoo, Clady when IRA gunmen opened fire at close range. The second man, ex Pte Daniel McCormick, had recently resigned from the Regiment. Sergeant Smyth had survived a previous attempt to kill him. He was 28 years old, off duty and married at the time of his death.

Pte Daniel McCormick, 6 UDR, 10th December 1971.

Daniel Left the Regiment in 1971.  and was the 1st UDR Veteran to be killed. He was shot by the IRA as he waited with a colleague in a Landrover for a third man to travel to work together. The gunmen who were waiting behind bushes opened fire from close range killing Daniel and Kenneth Smyth, a serving Sergeant. Daniel had resigned after receiving threats. He was 29 years old and married at the time of his death.
